Tape the sheet of paper on the inside of the other end of the box.

Use the pin to poke a tiny hole in the center of the foil.

Tape the foil over the rectangular hole in the box.

Make sure the foil is completely flat and not crinkled.

Using the scissors, cut out a piece of the aluminum foil slightly larger than the rectangular hole.

The longer the box, the larger the projected image. You can tape 2 boxes together to make a long box.

Cut a rectangular hole at the end of the box.

And it only requires a few extra items to construct. However, the box makes this projector much sturdier and easier to set on a surface. This type of pinhole projector works on the same principle as a basic pinhole projector. Projecting the Sun in a box projector, or with binoculars or a telescope, or using only 2 pieces of cardboard is a safe and easy way to see a solar eclipse.

You can seriously hurt your eyes and even go blind. Never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection. Watch an eclipse through a pinhole projector.

Personally, I think I’ll make something like this for a speedlight. You can use it merely as a guideline and build on it with your own ideas: use a larger box, a speedlight instead of a lamp, tracing paper instead of a plastic bag etc. Also, you don’t have to follow the exact steps. Since this DIY softbox is dirt cheap, it sure seems like a good idea if you’re on a tight budget. You can also use white linen or tracing paper to make the light softer. Now, take the aluminum foil and line up the inside of the softbox, fixing it with hot glue:įinally, stretch a white trash bag across the box and tape it down. You will line them around the lamp in the softbox and fix them with clear tape, shaped like this: Take the other cardboard box and cut out four trapezoids: Now, it’s time to make the reflectors on the inside of the softbox. Even if you cut a bit too much, don’t worry – you can always fill it in with hot glue and get it sealed. This will be the place to put your lamp, so make the hole only slightly bigger than the lamp. Next, mark the middle on the bottom of the box and cut the hole in the middle. However, if you can find a box that already is 10” high, it will save you some time. The box in the video is 18” x 18” x 16” and the first step is to cut it so it’s 10” high.

Go with LED lights, or even make a softbox like this for using it with speedlight. Keep in mind that incandescent light bulbs can get hot, so be careful when making and using a softbox like this. You might need to buy a lamp though: this one was used in the video, and it costs around $12.
